Rodents are the most diverse and abundant mammalian group in the Republic of Moldova, successfully inhabiting environments from dense woodlands to open agricultural landscapes. As a primary prey species, they serve an essential ecological function by supporting local populations of raptors and terrestrial carnivores.
The only mammals capable of true powered flight, bats are indispensable to Moldova's ecosystems for their role in natural pest control. Notable regional species include the Brown Long-eared Bat, the Common Noctule, and the Common Pipistrelle.
Comprising the apex predators of our local fauna, this order is fundamental to maintaining biological equilibrium by managing herbivore and rodent numbers. Across Moldova's forests and steppes, this group is represented by key species such as the Red Fox, European Badger, Wildcat, and Beech Marten.
These large-bodied herbivores are found throughout Moldova's protected reserves and expansive forest tracts. Iconic species like the Roe Deer, Red Deer, and Wild Boar are not only central to the country's biodiversity but also act as ecosystem engineers that shape the structure of the natural vegetation.
